Total, Girassol offshore facility - Angola

Total is the world's fourth largest oil and gas company and a world-class chemicals manufacturer. It operates in more than 130 countries and has over 110,000 employees.

The client

The group conducts oil and gas exploration and production operations in 43 countries, producing over 2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (125 millions tons/y).

Total is the operator of the Girassol FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) facility in Block 17, approximately 200 kilometers off the coast of Angola.

With an oil production capacity of 200,000 barrels per day (10 million tons per year) and a storage capacity of two million barrels, it is one of the world's largest FPSOs.

Client's needs

During oil production, water is injected into the reservoir to establish an external water drive and maintain the reservoir pressure. One of the key issues for the operators is the quality of the injection water and the reliability of the water treatment unit, to prevent any sulphate scale formation in the well.

The Girassol FPSO's injection water source is sea water. The customer's requirement was a system capable of treating 16.9 MGD (64,000 m3/d) of sea water for water injection.

Our solution

Veolia Water operates the Girassol sea water flood injection system, one of the world's largest units.

The facility uses a sulphate removal technology and allows the treatment of 16.9 MGD (64,000 m3) of sea water per day for water injection.

The sulphate removal process is based on state-of-the-art nanofiltration technology that selectively removes sulphate ions from sea water while allowing chlorides to pass through, thereby maintaining the stability of the reservoir clay.

One full-time Veolia Water's operator, based on site, assists the Girassol staff with the operation and maintenance of the water injection line. Consumables procurement and spare parts replacement are also assumed by Veolia Water.
