Biolix™

Fats and oils removal

A biological solution for efficient treatment of fats and oils removed from pretreatment units.

Overview

Biolix™ involves the aerobic biological treatment of oil and fats. It relies on the growth of an appropriate biomass, able to assimilate such a substrate with resulting production of sludge and CO2.

The fat trapped from the grit/grease removal system, or coming from an external source, is assimilated inside an aerated tank with appropriate mixing.

Features & Benefits

Compared to other methods of disposal (landfill, incineration, anaerobic biological treatment, composting, physical-chemical treatment) and their constraints, the Biolix™ process offers the following benefits:

  • Compactness
  • Easy operation
  • Low CAPEX and OPEX costs
  • Compatible with high loads
  • Full treatment chain.

Applications

The Biolix™ process is suitable to treat grease from both domestic and industrial origins and separated or pumped from:

  • pre-treatment units
  • CIP grease tanks.

The Biolix™ process is well adapted to domestic wastewater treatment, where fats are present due to human food waste.

It is especially suitable for the treatment of effluents from the food industry (i.e. slaughterhouses, dairies,...) with grease outputs as high as 250-300 HEM per liter.

Applications

The Biolix™ process consists in:

  • A screening or sieving unit to separate the non-biodegradable floating matter
  • A homogenization tank, which enables pH balance around 7 and the nutrient (N & P) input
  • An aerated and well-mixed biological reactor, fed continuously or semi-continuously to avoid an overly strong O2 demand and the production of bacterial growth inhibitors.

Performances

  • Sludge production: 0.2 kg SS/kg COD at the inlet
  • COD removal: 70-75% (soluble COD > 99%)
  • HEM removal: 85-95% (soluble lipids > 99%)
  • SS removal: 50-60%
